Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef exhibition

The art of crochet is being taken to a new level at the Powerhouse Museum in August, where a huge woollen coral reef made by crocheters from across the country will be displayed as part of the Ultimo Science Festival.

The idea for the reef came from Margaret and Christine Wertheim, two Queensland-born, LA-based sisters who are co-directors of think-tank, The Institute For Figuring (IFF). Worried about the deterioration of the Great Barrier Reef, they decided to raise environmental awareness by creating a crocheted reef, which was subsequently displayed in museums throughout the world.

The coral forms were made using the geometric craft technique, hyperbolic crocheting, which was invented by mathematician Dr Daina Taimina in 1997.
Margaret and Christine heard about Dr Taimina’s achievement, invited her to speak at the IFF, and began displaying her coral creations. Other crocheted reef projects have now sprung up in Chicago, New York, Arizona, Latvia and now Sydney.

In Stitches, the group behind the Sydney project, has spread the word about the Australian version of the reef, holding workshops in the Powerhouse Museum every month, where everyone from beginners to expert crocheters gather to create the woollen hyperbolic forms. The group hopes the exhibition will help raise awareness for the conservation of reefs and the environment in general.

The colourful crochet contributions will be put together by the In Stitches team to create a large and realistic-looking display reminiscent of the beautiful and delicate Great Barrier Reef. With so many helping out with the reef’s construction, it’s shaping up to be an impressive exhibition that will bring important conservation issues to light – and it’s a great way of showing how versatile and interesting crochet can be.

The exhibition will be held at
The Powerhouse Museum,
500 Harris Street, Ultimo, Sydney
from August 21-30, 2009.

  Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair

Quilters from all around Australia flocked to picturesque Darling Harbour to admire the stunning creations on display at the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair. The range of beautiful quilts were made by members of The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc and guest exhibitor Helen Godden, who showed some truly inspiring pieces that left many attendees lost for words.

The collection of craft stores at the Fair reported great business over the five days, with many avid stitchers picking up some sensational bargains. This year, the finalists in AP&Q’s inaugural AQC Challenge Competition were put on display and visitors were incredibly impressed by the quality of entries.

Ever wondered what to do with leftover strips of fabric?

Don’t throw them away! Use fabric strips to make scrap bindings for quilts – it’s a great way to bind quilts when you’re on a budget.

Use strips that are 2 1/2in wide and approximately 10in long (incorporating strips that are a little shorter or longer will add interest to the finished product) Sew the strips end-to-end with 45 degree seams, trim off all selvedges, then press the strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together – now you have beautiful scrap binding ready to go!
